Guardiani della Costa / Guardians of the Coast

“Guardiani della Costa / Guardians of the Coast” is a citizen science program active throughout Italy since November 2017 and sponsored byCosta Crociere Foundation, in partnership with Osservatorio Ligure Pesca Ambiente (OLPA), Scuola di Robotica, ENEA and TLC WebSolutions.

Upper secondary schools teachers and students are involved in an online education and awareness program on marine environment, plastic pollution, coastal biodiversity and climate change issues.

They are invited to take their scientific understanding out of the classroom and into the field, to monitor an adopted stretch of coastline and feed data into a central database using a free mobile App for iOs and Android developed specifically for the project.

A team of biologists then validates all information collected and makes it available in theme-based maps describing the state of Italian coastlines.

First project cycle has been completed in June 2018 with 156 schools, 600+ teachers, 5,7k students engaged, 1/3 of Italian coastline adopted (2,610 km out of 7,458), ≈70k records sent by the Guardians through the App (47% biodiversity, 45% marine litter and pollution, 8% other environmental indicators).

The second project cycle is underway in the current school year.

To strengthen the scientific component of the project and enrich the online educational program with new contents on micro-plastics pollution and the impact of the climate change on the sea, the Foundation started a new partnership with ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development).

As part of the project scale-up, beach cleaning and engagement activities will be organized involving Costa employees and partner travel agencies in Italy and abroad.

Habaneras shoping centre: #YoSoyTorrevieja

Habaneras Shopping Centre is launching an important
social awareness and beach cleaning campaign
Under the hashtag #YoSoyTorrevieja the Shopping Centre has prepared
numerous activities aimed at bringing environmental values and
protection to the people of Torrevieja
Habaneras Shopping Centre, managed by JLL, as one of Torrevieja’s main social agents, has
kicked the summer off by promoting an important social awareness campaign aimed at
improving the cleanliness and condition of the beaches of Torrevieja.
In order to carry out this much-needed action of raising awareness in society, the Shopping
Centre has reached an agreement with both the City Council of Torrevieja and Agamed which,
in addition to sharing the objective of taking interest in our natural environment and its
protection through education, will co-organize numerous activities throughout the summer.
These three entities will combine efforts and centre most of the events on the sea and oceans
and the need to care for our marine environment.
The kick-off of the #YoSoyTorrevieja campaign launched by Habaneras Shopping Centre will
be next Wednesday, 5 June, coinciding with World Environment Day. For this occasion, the
Shopping Centre has prepared the inauguration of a spectacular sculpture in the shape of a
large real life-sized white shark, which will serve as a rubbish bin for all of the plastics collected
by the public on the beaches during the multiple outings that the centre has planned for
throughout the campaign.
In addition to the great environmental benefit provided by this collection and cleaning work,
the Shopping Centre has reached an agreement with the Civil Guard of Torrevieja and will be
raffling a large number of bicycles among all of the participants who deposit the plastic
collected into this shark-bin. In addition, this non-polluting vehicle will be used throughout the
entire campaign to carry out the outreach work.

Another very important initiative started by Habaneras during this campaign is the “la patrulla
tiburón” (Shark Patrol); a very special patrol that will teach the youngest members of the
family the importance of preserving the seabed, as well as offer them the necessary tools to
avoid damaging our environment.
There will be a ton of surprises and events during this campaign which, in addition to caring for
the environment and our seabed, will also pay special attention to necessary preservation of
sharks. For this, Habaneras Shopping Centre has already confirmed the participation of the
renowned biologist and doctor in Marine Sciences, Claudio Barría, as well as the exhibition:
The Sea Watchers. Your look is the change, by the CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones
Científicas, Centre of Scientific Research).
A very important exhibition to be inaugurated at the Real Club Náutico of Torrevieja on 8 June,
World Oceans Day; with the collaboration of important biologists such as Juan Antonio Pujol,
PhD in Biology from the University of Murcia. On that same day, the first beach scan and
cleaning efforts will be organized.
At Habaneras Shopping Centre, we care for the environment while offering a summer full of
activities and events for your enjoyment.
#YoSoyTorrevieja. Enjoy Habaneras!!

Hacking Toilet this World Ocean Day

This year we have partnered with PlasticOceansUK to raise awareness around their research on Plastic Rivers. Their report sheds light on the most common plastic items clogging up our waterways, plus actions both consumers like you and businesses like us can take.

Did you know?

"Sanitary items make up 3% of identifiable plastic litter items found in European freshwater environments"

"Every day 4.6 million period products are flushed down the toilet in the UK alone"

"Most menstrual pads are made from 90% plastic. Plastic products can take up to a thousand years to decompose in landfill or in the ocean."

This horrendous violation of our environment can be stopped, with your help.

We are asking our dedicated FlushMob to:

  1. Pledge your commitment to action by signing up to our email list.
  2. Download our beautiful poster designed by Venus Libido and stick it to every toilet door you can find.
  3. Share your address so we can send you FREE UnFlushable campaign stickers
  4. Take a photo of your poster and stickers in place and share with the hashtags #Unflushable and #FlushMob so we can see them!
