As United Nations staff members, we dedicate our careers to improving the lives of others around the world. The adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, with its core set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are the UN’s blueprint for achieving a happier and healthier world by 2030. But how do we manifest these goals in our own lives?
Be the Change week will provide an opportunity for us to better “walk the talk” when it comes to the SDGs. During the week, staff will be encouraged to live more sustainably, by changing their consumption patterns, using active transport and buying local foods. Each day, participants will receive an email outlining the sustainability challenge of the day, with tips on how to achieve it. Your family, friends and roommates are encouraged to participate, too. The day’s challenge will be backed up by special events at UNHQ that you can participate in that day to learn more about living sustainable in New York.
Here’s the focus of each day (please note all events at UNHQ are open only to those with UN grounds passes. All are welcome at the East River clean-up):
Monday, 4 June: Active Transport Day (Goal 11)
At home challenge: Walk or bike to work
UNHQ activity: Bike tune-up demonstration, 9 a.m., Visitors’ Plaza
Tuesday, 5 June: No Making Trash Day / World Environment Day (Goals 12 and 13)
At home challenge: Try to create no trash or recycling for the whole day
UNHQ activity: UN Green Fair, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Visitors’ Plaza
Wednesday, 6 June: Local Food Day (Goal 2)
At home challenge: Buy and consume food made within 100 miles of your home.
UNHQ activities: Cafeteria quiz, 12-2 p.m., 4th floor cafe; UN Food Garden demo, 5-6 p.m.
Thursday, 7 June: Water and Energy Day (Goals 6 and 7)
At home challenge: Reduce your energy and water use.
UNHQ activity: Water documentary screening, 12-1 p.m., S-1520
Friday, 8 June: Give Back Day / World Oceans Day (Goal 14)
At home challenge: Volunteer in your community.
UNHQ activity: East River clean-up with Lower East Side Ecology Center, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
